Modifications To The Classroom Environment

Allocate the student to a chair that best allows him/her to observe you while avoiding disruptions (e.g., away from doors, windows, pen sharpeners).

-Eliminate extreme noise.

-Eliminate extreme visual stimulating elements and mess that might distract the teenager.

-Employ study carrels or chair the student in the area of the class room with the least disruptions, and/or face the desk toward the wall.  However, do not separate the teenager for a long period as this practice stigmatizes him/her.  Allow the student to engage in group work too.

-Keep directions and comments short and to the point.  Avoid "overloading" the student with too much vocabulary.

-Provide an personalized written schedule to which the student can refer.

-Provide a lively inflatable chair support.  The students will put there power into squirming on it, but they'll stay in the chair.

-Provide a "kusch ball" or other soft thing for the student to control.

-Allow the student to chew gum to release power and give the mouth something to do besides talk.
